Remembrance Day – When I was younger this was the day that we remembered the brave people who lost there lives in the 1^st and 2^nd World Wars. On the 11^th November 2011 the

The summer is fast approaching and we at school supplies express are getting ready for our summer holidays. Our favourite break of all, is of course camping in the great outdoors!

Fresh air and wishing for sunshine, keeps us smiling, and how better to experience and embrace the spirit of this adventure, than by joining your local Brownie or Guides and Scout Pack.

More Sutton Schools applying for Academy Status

Arthur Terry School is the latest to pursue academy status – Alan Wharton, Chair of Governors at the school, announced that they will submit an expression of interest to the Department for Education at the end of the month.

Applications have also been submitted by Fairfax School, Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls and the Deanery C of E Primary.

Academy status – which is only available to schools rated as ‘outstanding’ or ‘good with outstanding features’ – promises schools decreased bureaucracy and greater control over the curriculum.

It also grants financial independence – with government funding going directly to schools instead of the Local Authority.

Rated highly by Ofsted, many of Sutton’s schools are not eligible for Local Authority grants and support services, which are currently distributed according to city-wide priorities. Fairfax, for example, is the least well funded school in the city – it receives over £1000 less per pupil than the average Birmingham school.

Fairfax is still calculating how much net profit this increased independence would generate but Richard Petley, Chairman of Governors at Deanery C of E Primary, predicts his school would gain an extra 8% on their current budget.

At a recent consultation session Mr Petley told parents: “The LEA have already announced their key priorities and it is unlikely this will involve extra funding for Sutton schools.”

At a time of intense pressure on educational funding, the opportunity to increase income is attractive. Head teacher at Arthur Terry School, Christopher Stone, hopes that a projected 9% increase in funds would enable his school to reduce its budget deficit from 16% to 7%.

The Department for Education states that in order to achieve academy status schools must ‘agree in principle to support another school to raise standards’. Schools are free to select a partner school of their own choice.

Consultation processes are currently underway, during which head teachers have reassured parents that the changes would not affect schools’ admissions criteria.

The process of converting to an academy takes around three months, but no change will be made to a school’s status until a Funding Agreement has been signed.

A couple of the staff here have friends in the region and our thoughts are not only with them at this time, but everyone whose lives are so dramatically affected during this difficult time. I think we have found it even more difficult as most of us here are parents, and you can't help but think of the plight of those affected with children. Like everyone else watching Mother Nature at it's worst on the television, we feel so helpless but also very fortunate to be living in a Country where, although our economic climate is dubious to say the least, life threatening natural disasters are rare. Birmingham Secondary School admissions announced tomorrow......

For all Year 6 parents and pupils the wait is nearly over!!! Birmingham City Education Department announces tomorrow the 2011 Secondary School admissions. The majority of parents and pupils won't be disappointed however there will be some that will need to go through the appeals process. If you completed the online admissions form you will be notified by e mail tomorrow (1 March). All postal applications will be notified on 2 March (post depending) as all letters are posted on 1 March. GCSE League tables now published

Schools Supplies Express have noticed that the GCSE League tables have now been published, with the majority of Schools and pupils achieving fantastic results. One of Birmingham's Schools has kept it's record of being the most improved in the UK ever - Perry Beeches Schools in Perry Barr scored 100per cent of A* to C grades including Maths and English. The result compared with a national average of 53.1 per cent. Well done to you all - your hard work has obviously paid off!!

The SSE Elves have made their stop and the chosen School we are pleased to announce is WOODLANDS SCHOOL in Coleshill.

This year our Sister Company XDP Express and we at Schools Supplies Express decided to support a School that is close to all our hearts and provides a great service to the surrounding communities.

The Directors of XDP & SSE has a grandson/nephew Alex who recently started here in September & at SSE we feel that we have forged an excellent relationship with Woodlands this year supplying uniforms to staff & pupils.

Alex is a wonderful little boy who with Woodlands guidance we are sure will blossom greatly and be a credit to whom all who know him like the rest of Woodlands Pupils who over the summer we have been privileged to meet.

It has been found by a new national survey that parents are experiencing an increase in outgoings coming up to the new school year, with costs spiraling up to and over £1000 per child due to new school uniforms, school trips and accessories. They are also feeling pressured into buying famous brand name items for their children.

The survey was conducted for DiscountVouchers.co.uk, which is a popular money saving website relating to the outgoings parents have coming up to the start of the new school year.

More than 50% of those who were surveyed said they felt pressured into buying equipment and clothing for their children that were of a popular brand name. 25% of those parents said they did not want their child to feel left out due to not having the latest clothing or items. 1 in 10 families surveyed, felt that their child would be bullied for not having famous branded clothing.

It was found that mothers were twice as likely to feel pressured as fathers and they would also be more likely to worry about bullying. Only 1 in 10 schools had a policy against children wearing brand label clothing.

Simon Terry, a DiscountVouchers.co.uk spokesperson said, “The costs associated with the new school year are rising and parents are feeling the strain, especially at a time like this when money is tight. What is even more worrying than the costs is that bullying is a factor in the decision to buy these items”.

Up to £500 is spent on new school clothing by 95% of parents, as well as up to £500 by 815 of respondents, on school activities such as music lessons and after school swimming lessons. 1 in 10 parents spent up to £1000 on their children for extras such as after school activities, while 3% of parents had spent over £1000.

The survey found that 90% of families bought new uniforms for the 2010/2011 school year. 75% of the children had new sports clothing for school and 65% were bought new school bags, coats and stationery. 21% had new sporting equipment bought and 1 in 12 children had been bought with a new mobile phone before the school year was to commence.

Adding to the costs, half of those parents who were questioned also bought their children different uniforms for the winter and summer months.

Regardless of the spiraling costs, 62% of the families surveyed said they would never allow their children to go to school in a second hand uniform.

As more and more articles are written in the local papers, more radio shows discussing the same old topics.

Well this year schools supplies express decided to make a difference, we are run by parents for parents and are currently eating up a large percentage of our market in the midlands however soon hope to expand nationwide.

As parents we understand all the frustration of cost and issues that arise therefore we took these issues into our own hands and started supplying uniform a cheaper prices which included great quality, there’s no catch, our parents deliver to houses or send through a courier or mail, orders can be placed online through out ecommerce website or over the phone, our aim is to offer the parents an alternative not a sole supplied

Lets no forget the importance of school uniform and the comfortable unity it gives children they have plenty of time in there adult life to be unique.

Little Sutton Primary parents very pleased!

Parents of pupils at Little Sutton Primary School are very pleased to have Schools Supplies Express as another Supplier of their School uniform. Due to the colour of the uniform - turquoise - parents have, up til now, only been able to purchase from one Supplier at quite a high cost. Even high street stores and supermarkets have been out of the question. Our co-ordinator Jo first went to Little Sutton and says "the first meeting I had with Little Sutton was great. However, some of you maybe surprised to know that Schools Supplies Express have always offered alternative sizes. Whilst these are not always shown on the website we are only a phone call away, so should your child be larger than usual or more petite we will most likely be able to help. Tracey in Customer Services said "we have just had a mom in who's daughter is very tall for her age, and with this has longer than usual arms, making larger blazers totally unsuitable as the body on them just swamped her. For the cost of a high street blazer, we manager to get her a bespoke blazer made from her measurements and mom (and pupil) was delighted!!". Schools Supplies Express are always help to support our Schools where we can, and last week we presented Hollyfield Primary School with National Garden Centre vouchers. They are currently looking to refurb the garden outside of the Reception area, and after hearing of their plans, Schools Supplies Express were only pleased to help. Infact last week we spent quite abit of time at Hollyfield, as we also attended two induction sessions for the new Reception children starting in September. As always we were made to feel very welcome, and the sessions were a great time for new parents to meet us and talk about their requirements. We had lots of little ones trying our garments on for size and lots of extremely positive feedback from parents. We did however receive one critisism - we should have been about years ago!!! Schools Supplies Express is taking more of an interest in the forthcoming general election as Education seems to be an election centrepiece. Conservative leader David Cameron has outlined plans to allow parents and other providers to set up schools with state funding. Launching his party's manifesto, Mr Cameron has promised parents "the power to get a good new school in your community". The manifesto also says all schools, including primaries, will be able to have the autonomy of academy status, and there is a commitment that all pupils should be able to read by the age of six. Pupils and parents found out yesterday which Secondary School they would be attending in September, with around a third of ten year olds missing out on their first choice - according to council figures. But more than 85 per cent of pupils were offered a place at one of their top three preferences and more than 94 percent landed an offer from one of their six choices. Although no details have yet been issued about which schools were most in demand, grammar and faith schools are traditionally the most popular. This was also the first year for Birmingham City Council that parents could be informed by text if they so wished. The appeals procedure for unhappy parents is now in full swing, however if recent stats are to be believed there are usually an average of 1000 appeals with only 3.6 percent being successful. Jacob made his way into the world a month early last night weighing a very healthy 6 pounds 8 ounces - mother and baby are doing well, and Dad Matthew is very happy and proud of them both.
